I am considering some land scape option that would require mounding about 1 foot of dirt around the base of my 10 feet japanese bloodgood maple. I wonder if that would damage the tree? The diameter of the base of the tree is about 5 inches

So you want to bury the trunk of your tree under a foot of dirt? I wouldn't do that - it'll suffocate the tree.

Very likely this would kill the tree.

Even just half that would likely be enough to kill it.
