More rhododendrons today. This is Rhododendron mucronulatum. It looks so delicate up close, but we could see it from way across the field. The Rhododendron moupinense is very densely covered with white blossoms and wonderful orangey bud scales. I think I posted this Daphniphyllum macropodum some other year. I like the leaf pattern and the way it hides its berries under the leaves. Well no, it's not in bloom. And it's not a rhododendron. And a filbert - Corylus maxima 'Butler'.
I don't know what that area is called where the rhododendrons are, 1P01 on the plan. You can see that they're both right next to the amphitheatre, at the north end of the meadow in the North Garden. It might be called the Meadow. The Daphniphyllum is in the Asian Garden, near the garden entrance, area 3AB6, but I can't make sense of what I remember and what I see on my plan for where that must be. Near Siebold. The filbert is in the Garry Oak meadow, on the bluff on your left as you walk up the path from the tunnel.
1P01 is the Winter Garden, such as it is. The area doesn't really have a new designation, so The Old Winter Garden will work for now. And while the filbert may be accessioned in the Garry Oak meadow, its presence there predates it -- we'd consider it to be on the edge of the Food Garden. It will likely be removed when additional funding is secured to plant more of the Garry Oak meadow.
Removed could mean "moved", though I doubt that will be the case. We're looking at making some changes to the Food Garden as well, so I'm guessing its fate will be tied to those plans too.
