Well, well......., the forum is pretty quiet in the depth of the winter =o[. I suggest we cheer up a bit with some seasonal bark pics. Slide the cursor in each pic to see the label. The last one is not a maple but it is in my garden and I find it amazing. Other contributions are welcomed ;-)) Gomero
Great pictures, thanks for sharing them. Slightly off topic, is your 'Waka momiji' the one with the variegated foliage or non-variegated?
Surely the last is Quercus suber, not Q. robur? The 'Nishiki gawa' looks like it has some sort of fungal disease, with all those brackets on the bark.
Of course, it is a 100 years old Quercus suber, too quick typing. The 'Nishiki gawa' is one of many 'rough bark' selections of acer palmatum. After many years the smooth bark starts changing as shown in the picture for, eventually resemble pine bark or corky bark. Gomero
It is the non variegated 'Waka momiji' as described in 'Maples for Gardens': differing little from type except in its coral red twigs which are not unlike those of 'Sango kaku' thus right in topic Gomero
Thanks. The variegated one is said to have red twigs too, but not sure how red they are compared to the one described. (Wasn't suggesting the picture was off topic, just that my question was veering in that direction.)
Hi Gomero, Do you have Acer negundo 'Winter Lightening'? It has incredible yellow bark color. I'll try and photo mine this week and post. Brian
Please, do post Brian. I just have a small 2 years old graft and I would love to see a bigger one. I also encourage others to pitch in ;-))) Gomero
