Cannot wait to go see it this year! The last time I went to the Jardin is about 12 years ago and I live in Montreal! :-( But my gardening passion is pretty new, so that's my excuse!
I was at Au Jardin de Jean-Pierre on Friday to pick up the stuff I ordered from Oregon last fall & winter, and they said they would be at the Montreal Botanical Garden show again this year, as in past years (the newly posted "liste des producteurs" confirms it). I expect that one thing to look for at their stand will be a display of Japanese umbrella pines (Sciadopitys verticillata). I saw about a half-dozen fairly large ones at JJP -- the first time I've seen them in real life. As far as I know, no other nursery in Quebec has them. Quite spectacular - but also pricey.... I didn't buy any -- besides, my minivan was filled with so many plants already anyway, I couldn't see out the rear & right windows when driving...
re: besides, my minivan was filled with so many plants already anyway, I couldn't see out the rear & right windows when driving... All for you own land? Are you an amateur garderner or do you work in the business? I used to kill all living things in my house that was not humain. Fish, plants and small trees. Then, a couple years ago 3 plants survived more than 6 months in my appartment. We bought a house last year and since then, I have accumulated more than 30 indoors plants. And they all trhive! ;-) I want to see if I can have gardens outiside... I'm reading about the subject and I ask LOTS of questions! My driveways and backyards are not done yet (will be this summer), so I can do anything except patio pots and such. I think I will be able to start with some bulbs and perenials in August. PS: if you have mags or books to suggest, please go right ahead!
Yep, just a lowly amateur ! The house I bought nearly two years ago came with a fairly large back yard (for a suburban house), with absolutely nothing but grass and dandelions in it -- hard to believe that the previous owners did nothing with it for 20 years !! First I pulled out all the thousands of dandelions -- roots included -- and now I'm filling it up with various plants -- mostly conifers: see attached photo from mid-April (need to take updated photos). I should have said previously that much of the space in my minivan was taken by two Brewer's spruce trees -- something that's been on my wish list for quite some time. But the trees - especially the pots - were quite a bit larger than expected -- it was a real wrestling match getting them into the holes I dug for them last fall. But in the end I won, and now they're happily sitting out there enjoying another spring rain shower....
Re: Yep, just a lowly amateur ! Aren't we all?! ;-) re:hard to believe that the previous owners did nothing with it for 20 years !! Some people just don't like it or just don't want to be bothered by it, because let's face it, it does take time and money to take care of a land! re:dandelions Is this the English word for pissenlits? re: see attached photo from mid-April (need to take updated photos). Nice! Can't wait to see what else you'll do! re: But in the end I won, and now they're happily sitting out there enjoying another spring rain shower.... Yep... it's raining and raining... I'm hoping it won't rain this weekend. I plan on starting some flower pots for outside... Have a nice weekend Jaro! Annie ;-)
Yes, "pissenlits" are indeed dandelions ! Although we are often vastly outnumbered by them (like the snowflakes in the TV winter tire commercial), their weakness is their single root, which is relatively easy to pull out with the rest of the plant, with the aid of a small digging tool -- particularly the big old plants, with a root almost as thick as a person's finger ! I pulled out most of the ones in my front & back yards last spring (several garbage bags full), but a few small ones were left hiding in the grass, so I still occasionally go on a dandelion "hunting trip" to get rid of the remaining ones.... (better to do it now, before the biting insects come out). At one time, I thought of planting Orange Hawkweed (Hieracium aurantiacum - "devils paintbrush") in my yard, because it looks so attractive in the countryside -- until I found out that its an invasive plant like dandelions. Thank goodness for the Internet ! The only plants I have now in the back yard that seem to spread fairly quickly by themselves are some lovely ferns -- of course they will confine themselves to the relatively shady, humid areas I planted them in.... As you can see in the picture, I also planted a number of creeping-type junipers, but again, these are not nearly as invasive as the weeds.... By contrast, the Lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis) plants in my front yard are likely to spread fairly uncontrollably (but only to where the lawn begins), as will the adjacent Sempervivums. Looking forward to seeing how it will all turn out in another 10 to 20 years -- particularly the dwarf conifer cultivars and natural conifer species.... Over thirty years ago we planted a ~2-foot diameter Colorado Spruce at my parents' house, which now has a trunk as wide as the entire plant was back then. Very impressive.
I don't have to deal with weeds and dandelions yet... I have sand and rocks only! ;-) What I like most about gardening is the constant evolution. From year to year things change and grow. You can add or remove plants and improve the view!
