I believe the plant in the photo to be a Monotropa hypopitys (although I can't say I'm certain). It was taken last June at Alice Lake Provincial Park, near Squamish, BC. When I first spotted it, I didn't think it could actually be a plant - perhaps someone had left some garbage around. It had a waxy appearance, and it really stood out in the dim forest. It was beautiful, but I had no idea what it could possibly be until I did some internet research at home. I think my identification is right, but my knowledge of plants is pretty minimal, so I can't be sure. http://www.fs.fed.us/wildflowers/interesting/mycotrophic/monotropa_hypopitys.shtml
