I have a monkey puzzle tree that is approx 25 to 30 years old and i would estimate approx 30' tall.I noticed the other day a split in the trunk from the ground up about 2'.
The bark is approx 1" to 1 1/2" thick and the split is filling up with sap,on the opposite side of the trunk i see little patches of sap appearing, also i notice some of the branches 4 or 5' up from the ground are getting darker looking towards a brown color.
Any idea what is happening here?Appreciate any help or suggestions,do not want to lose this beautifull tree.
    Thanks

Does the splitting go right down to the wood, or is it just in the bark? Can you post some photos?

I believe the split goes right down to the wood since it is 1" to 1 1/2" deep and 1" to 1 1/2" wide at the bottom.I will try and get a photo when the rains quit, the split is on a side that is very close to other plants and hard to see.
