Monkey puzzle tree hardiness

Discussion in 'Araucariaceae' started by Unregistered, Sep 11, 2003.

  1. I would like to ask what climatic zone is the coldest that might nevertheless be tolerated by the monkey puzzle tree. I live in Maryland, USA, and Pennsylvania, USA. Thank you.

The following was also received via email on the same day:

I live in the Ottawa area, would a monkey puzzle tree survive here?

according to Dirr, zone 7, he mentions that survival is possible in Knoxsville Tennessee if that helps you compare climate at all.

  4. I have seen two 15' Monkey Puzzle trees in Wayne PA (15 miles west of Philadelphia). The owners said they planted them as 1' trees. They are in full sun and look fabulous.

They are very marginal at best in zone 7, tolerating temperatures down to about -20°C. All the specimens in Denmark (zone 7) were killed in the severe 1981/82 winter when temperatures widely fell to below -25°C
