Hello, I have a 30 year old very healthy Monkey Puzzle Tree. I was shocked to see the top 20% with add-on dying limb ends. Your site soon relieved me of my worry, finding out it's a male tree propagating. What do I do now? Leave them alone? I noticed someone bought 20 seeds for $12 on ebay. Are they in demand? Thank you.
The pollen cones will drop off in a few months, after the pollen has shed. So yes, just leave them. Unfortunately, you won't get any seeds from your tree, as it is a male.
Usually one or the other, but not always. I'm sure I've seen combo trees before, possibly in Seattle but not realizing the novelty never made a note of them. "Some trees are male, others female; extremely few bisexual. The large round 5-8" wide female cones break up when mature in late summer or fall, releasing bid edible seeds tedious to husk but worth the effort. They are (or were) a staple crop, usually roasted, for the natives in Chile and Argentina. If a male tree is not near enough to pollinate the female, most of the husks will be hollow duds." --A.L. Jacobson, Trees of Seattle - Second Edition
Yep, but they're rare, I've only seen one or maybe two. Got this pic today of the only one I definitely remember seeing. Pollen cone (sausage-shaped) just above a seed cone (globose).
