I bought a mock orange (Philadelphus virginalis) four years ago. It is now well established with lots of "last year's wood". However it has never flowered and once again there are no flower buds. My neighbour has a huge old mock orange which he totally ignores, that is already showing lots of flower buds. His mock orange gets less or about the same amount of direct sun as mine. Is there something I can do to encourage mine to flower?
Make sure it is in full sun. Fertilize. If nothing happens, next year take a shovel and cut the soil around the bush about 2 feet out from the stem. This is called root pruning. It sends a signal to the plant to LIVE, and in order to live and survive, it must bloom.
