I was going to start a new thread with this cultivar in the Gallery, but I thought we may have some fun guessing the species. It is a recent European selection so it is probably not available in the US. If another European reader has it, please keep shut!! Gomero
Lol Gomero, I fear that is an impossible question to answer unless one is in the know, (which I am not), it looks so out of the ordinary. Are the originators sure it is a species cultivar and not a hybrid? Unusual certainly, and kind of interesting, but not exactly attractive..........and no I can't guess the species.
Yukk! Just about the most hideous maple I've ever seen! Has the causative virus or mycoplasma been identified? On Acer ginnala, perhaps?
Ok, we give up Mr Gomero, what is it? It looks too wierd to be a palmatum. Are you sure this is a maple?
Gomero did say species. Hubby says, "Is it ragweed?" LOL. Wrong genus. Sorry, Gomero. Don't mean to bash on the new kid, but I have to agree it's a bit of an ugly duckling.
Michael guessed it correctly, good eye. It is Acer tataricum ssp ginnala 'Waasland's Dwarf', selected at the Waasland Nursery in Belgium and listed by Peter Gregory in the latest edition of his book. The secondary growth has unmistakenly ginnala leaves. I assure you it has gorgeous Fall colors LOL. Gomero
Hehe. Too bad it's already named... I like Acer revoltum, how about Acer nasticum or Acer ginalla ssp barfifolium? Truly awful! A real collectors item! :) (I wonder if those desirous of having this but unable to obtain it might achieve the same result with Roundup?) -E
Well, everybody....., remember that 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' ;o)). I agree it would be out of place in a mixed border but alone, in a raised bed rockery (as in the pics), it fits quite well. Plus the bonus of stunnig fall color....., ready to buy it? Gomero
I have a little trident that is almost as ugly as that little guy. That one looks like a sugar maple sprayed with herbacide. Mine, however, has speckled yellowish variegation on a green base and contorted leaves like that.
