I've been given a mission fig tree in a two gallon pot. It's very healthy and has immature figs on it. Is it possible to grow this variety sucessfully in the Fraser Valley area, and if so, I 'd like to do this in a pot. Any suggestions? I know NOTHING about figs except eating them! Thanks for any help. MaryJ
Congratulations! I don't see why you couldn't grow figs in the Fraser Valley. They grow well in here Vancouver and the temperatures in the Fraser Valley tend to be slightly higher. I have two trees planted in the ground. The soil should not be too rich or organic. I don't think you need to keep you tree in a pot. You should plant you tree in well drained and sunny location. Protect your tree from frost. Figs bear fruit on the 2nd year old branches. If the immature fruit is frosted over winter, then you'll get less fruit that year. I do recommend that you exercise patience and properly prune your young fig to establish a good branch structure. I couldn't wait for more fruit when my tree was young and now I have remedial pruning to do and wait until more fruit.
Thanks so much for your reply. I'm encouraged, because everything I've read about Mission Figs says they need lots of heat and a long growing season. Regardless, i'm pressing on and hoping to feast next year. Thanks again MaryJ
