I'm new to miniature roses and have planted a couple in pots on my deck for the summer. They've done great and bloomed continuosly but now winter is coming and I'm not sure what to do. Alberta of course has freezing temperatures and I'm not sure if I should try to bring the pots inside for the winter or put them in a protected outdoor location. Any suggestions or past experiences?
They will not survive exposed to the long freezing they experience in Alberta on your deck. You will need to put them in a protected area. In a garage or a shed completely wrapped with insulation batts inside a tight plastic cover completely out of any light might work. Or, dry them right back outside till all leaves are gone, prune back to 3 inches of stem, place them in a dark corner of a heated area with no watering to force dormancy. When the day s get longer in late Feb/March bring it into the house and let it get all the light it can to start a new season, feeding and watering proportionally to growth. Place it back outside when the danger of frost is passed.
