I'm new to Ohio (from California), and gardening in my daughter and son-in-law's garden just outside of Cleveland. They have an enormous lilac tree, but I've notice what appears to be mildew on the leaves of some of the outer branches. The tree needs to be cut back for certain; other than that, and knowing the humidity in this area, is mildew common and nothing to worry about?
Powdery mildew is unsightly, but probably not fatal to the tree. Yep, good old Ohio humidity enhances its spread! To answer your questions, yes, it is common; no, likely it is nothing to worry about. If you want to, consult your local nursery for recommendation of an appropriate fungicide. Welcome to Ohio!
Thanks so much for your reply re mildew. I cannot wait to relocate to Lakewood near my daughter, as I spent a couple of days working in her garden and it's the best therapy ever for me.
She is lucky to have your enthusiasm and energy! And yep, working amongst plants has wonderfully beneficial effects, in many ways. Good luck to you with the move, and happy gardening.
