Just recently obtained this beautiful cultivar and many others and it was all green several days ago but now the outer leaves are turning black/brown? I have this plant and several others reticulated/variegated cultivars in the same spot that gets some afternoon sun and all the reticulated/variegated have been doing great even though I was told these weren’t as heat tolerant as the mikawaya. I have now placed the mikawaya in full shade but it seems like the leaves are still getting worse? Any ideas?

Thanks for any comments in advance!!

Browning at the tips is usually a sign of underwatering.
Also as you have recently purchased it, then a change in environment conditions can cause problems. Keep it out of direct sunlight, check watering regularly and it should settle down.
Often the first year of bringing a maple home can see a few problems. Patience is the key.

I always have trouble with small fresh Mikawa grafts the first year. I think they do need a year to settle in to see if they care strong enough to weather the elements and build up their strength.

I'll post a picture of my Mystic for you Insidious, it's having some trouble too. And much like your Mikawa, it's small and freshly grafted most likely. I think getting it in a protected place and keeping a eye on it without overwater or underwater is key for it to survive the first critical year.

What color is your Mystic at this current time. Mine is pretty much full on green at this point......but as of yesterday, some fringe top leaves is turning back to some hints of limish pink.

Those small 1 gallon Mikawa’s are going to very picky for the first year. In all likely hood it came from a greenhouse which is goldy locks conditions and out into the unregulated environment. Even my larger Mayday did this when it got to me because it had been raised in a greenhouse. They take a year to adjust and even after a year might show some stress due to cold snaps or frosts. They are just very susceptible when they are young. You can see the crispy tips on my Mayday. My larger mature Mikawa’s are the only ones that never throw a fit.
