I purchased 2 trees with fruit on them in February. Over the last few months I have seen tremendous new growth, flowers and now have new fruit starting. What I didn't notice until now is that part of the new growth are thorny branches with three narrow leaves growing right out of the center on one tree only. Since they don't grow from seeds is this a result of grafting and should I clip those branches off?
Sounds like growth from a trifoliate rootstock. Growth originating from below the graft line is normally removed when it first appears.
