Mediterranean shrub - Montenegro

    Anyone know what this cultivated shrub is? Photographed in Montenegro (Balkans). It's just leafing out now. Leaf is brittle, similar texture as an olive leaf. Has grey fissured bark. Let me know if you want more photos.

    That looks like a young Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa). Nice to see an NZ native so far from home.

    Thanks for the reply... does Metrosideros excelsa grow as a shrub / hedge? I've only seen this a few places over here and always grown as a dense hedge. I looked up the species you suggested and saw it growing as a tree. Leaves looked very similar. I've never seen this one flower...

    It's definitely a tree though it will grow well as a hedge. It will have very few if any flowers when grown as a trimmed hedge.
