Which medicinal plants grow well on Vancouver Island? Where can I find organic seeds or seedlings? Thanks.

Ask the Tribal Elders of local Native American people, they'd know best!

Pojar/Mackinnon native plants guidebook has lots about aboriginal uses.

Also, look for books by Dr. Nancy Turner - one of British Columbia's most expert ethnobotanists.

Thank you. I checked her books on Amazon and they look fabulous. I will order a few out of interest and do appreciate the referral. Alas, they don't appear to offer info on medicinal plants which grow on the Island, native or not, nor how to obtain organic seeds or seedlings. However, I do look forward to reading Nancy J. Turner on related subjects. Thanks again.

I think it'd be alright if you emailed Nancy re: references specifically on medicinal plants (and looking back at your original question, I think we've all assumed so far you are talking about native plants). Still, Nancy will likely have ideas re: medicinal plants from other cultures.

As for obtaining organically produced seeds or organically-grown seedlings, that question might be a bit more easily answered once you have identified those plants you're seeking. In general, though, a search for organic nursery medicinal produces a few hits that look positive.

Emailing Nancy directly is a great idea. I found her email address and have written. And Holy Commolly Batman - I found a fabulous page for an organic garden center in Victoria that stocks medicinal herb seeds. It is all in the right text string I guess. Thank you so much!

    Lavender :)
So multi-purpose. Hardy perennial. Repeat bloomer. Easy to propagate.
Smells great after a fresh rain :)

Do you happen to have a link or the name of the organic garden center in Victoria? I would be interested in checking them out as well ... thanks.

Try Hazelwood herb farm in Ladysmith, lots of medicinal plant starts for sale, I'm told. I'm guessing when you say "medicinal" you're referring to varieties/strains that have been bred specifically for medicinal production: reason I'm mentioning it, rather large portions of the 'perennial' section of common garden centers consist of numerous plants with medicinal uses, though perhaps not varieties bred specifically for high concentrations of active ingredients. Heck, even Scotch Broom is a medicinal plant. Lots of growers on Vancouver Island growing chinese medicine plants, some aruyevedic, etc. If you are stuck looking for a specific plant, you can send me a private message and I can perhaps forward you to a local source.

The most important medicinal plant is St. John's Wort (Hyperictum perforatum) and grows wild all over the island.

Stinging Nettle (Urtica duicua), Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Horsetail (Equistum arvense), Bedstraw (Galium) are other medicinal plants growing wild in profusion on Vancouver Island. No need to plant it.
