    This a shot of a visting friend at the base of one of Stanley Park's great trees. Can you believe this tree is in a Vancouver city park?

    Thuja plicata - shame there's so much bark missing at the base, but I guess that's probably what saved it from the loggers anyway?

    Can you believe Vancouver Parks cut a bunch of the big Stanley Park trees down?

    Unforunately yes. I am amazed that it is not mostly condos by now. If I remember correctly the tree in the above photo had its top blown off by a storm. But to have a park within city limits that still has old growth trees is amazing.
