Hello, I’ve had a prayer plant (Maranta leucoreura) for a few months now. It is about 18 inches tall and growing very well. My problem is that I don’t really know the growth pattern of this plant. It is growing straight up, and I fear that it will eventually topple over. Is this supposed to happen? Do people normally stake these plants up? Am I supposed to prune it back, and if so can I root the cuttings for another plant? Thanks all, Michael
That's interesting... they usually always have shortish straight stems, but the leaves bend over backwards on them except at night when they close up. Have you tried changing its lighting? Sorry don't know about rooting new ones, try googling. I never heard of staking them, but if it looks like it will fall, try a couple of stakes with string (like you would for a peony).
prayer plants are a hanging plant ..they will flow over so dont worry about it .. they dont grow upwards . and dont stake it .. just let it go .. and as far as rooting it .. well i went a took a pic of mine and wrote on the pic as to were to cut and were the roots are .. just stick the plant from the root area down in the water and it will root fast .. you could make the stem a lil longer if you want Marn
Thanks a million! I had just noticed roots forming this morning. I thought that is was the start of a new branch. Guess I was wrong... good. Michael
oh your welcome .. you will get new growth soon .. bulike i said you can have it as a hanging plant or sitting on a plant stand and let it flow down .. Marn
Yeah, thanks again. I won't cut it just yet. If they are supposed to fall over then I will let it. Perhaps later I'll do some cutting and plat them in the same pot just to fill it up a bit more. Michael
oh it will fill up the pot .. it will also grow new stalks from the dirt, but also just keep spreading and filling up .. and they like morning sun .. i have mine sitting near a window were it gets late morning and early afternoon sun .. and it has flowered also .. i think they look so pretty when they bloom Marn
