As the clocks went back through the night and I looked around my garden after a very heavy storm this morning to leaves practically everywhere other than where they were the day before, I thought 'what about the branches' !!!!? We all love our trees in the seasons of Spring new growth, Summer lush leaves and of course dazzling Autumn. But what about how they look through the Winter months, with frost, snow and raindrops hanging from every stem ? I feel that these months are just as interesting as the others, so how about photos of our trees naked, Lol. I'm sure they won't mind !!!! I am happy to start the process off, but if anybody else has some already, then please do add your photos to this thread.
Most of my trees are not bare yet but here are my Aconitifolium, Shirazz, Red dragon, Jordan, Koto no ito and Watnong. I find it more difficult to get some good pictures of bare trees but hopefully this will do.
@MapleMO good afternoon M , yes you are right they are difficult to photograph, but it does show the structure and form. Hopefully this thread will also keep us all connected a little better this Winter rather than lose contact.
The sun is out here in Southern England after heavy rain all weekend and my old Red dissectum has lost all it's leaves from the storms. Definatly bare bones now for the next five months.
What a great idea for a thread D. I think @dicky5ash will appreciate this. I will try and get some pics over the next few days.
@Luke’s Maples, thanks Luke, I thought it might be an idea to keep us all connected over the Winter months and hopefully show a different side to all our trees.
OK so not Winter just yet, but the bare bones on my Inaba Shidare is showing all the contortions already, after a complete leaf drop overnight, so I thought, Why not !!!
Still not Winter, but November 5th feels like it. So here is my Bi hoo this morning to add to the bare bones thread. A different view from @AlainK tree, but thought this would be a fun thing to do to help us all through this difficult Winter. That's Amber ghost next to it btw.
@Houzi good afternoon J, a glorious day weather wise for us in the South of England. Got to have something to brighten this day up. What a great Bi-hoo you have there, yours doesn't seem to be getting smaller each year as so many do !!! Wonderful colouring.
The contorted branches of what I believe to be Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood' (here before we moved in) are testiment to its rather hard life. Some butcher cut it back before moving it from its happy childhood home to a hot, rocky position where it did not receive sufficient water for many years (my fault). Now however, it is watered regularly and is responding so well. In fact, I'm now having to trim it back every couple of years. Are Japanese maples always so forgiving?
@Margot yes they are very forgiving. The shapes of the branches tell so much more of a story of a tree than the leaves. Yours is looking lovely btw. Still holding onto a few red leaves!!
That is so lovley Alain and covered in buds. Yes I know we enjoy our trees with leaves, but as you have just shown there is an elegance to the Winter maple.
Hard to say : it's an air-layer done in 2014 from an air-layer taken several years earlier. Here it was when being air-layered a second time :
Ryusen's strange silhouette. The first photo is a bit blurred but it's getting dark outside and I don't like photos taken with a flashlight :
