re Japonicum…Both of my Japonicum Aureum’s, and Vitifolium have failed to impress with Autumn colour yet again..I wonder if it’s because I keep them in very shaded locations.. but this small Japonicum Ruby (new addition this year) looks nice.

The Aconitifolium that’s in a sunny spot did nothing this year..leaves went from green to brown and fell off..the other in a shaded location is still solid green

Good morning R, I have moved some of my japonicum's from sun to shade and vice versa, but still they just do their own thing with no apparent pattern. Some years colours, other years brown and drop.
Love that Ruby btw. Don't move it, Lol.

    I find 'Red Dawn' stunning.
The best moment for many maples is when there's a mix of green leaves, and others with autumn colours...

Went to the Seattle Japanese Garden last week. We also visited the Kubota Gardens and the Pacific Bonsai Museum.

Really lovely day in Washington, the brilliant yellow Ginkgo at the Seattle Japanese Maple gardens stole the show for the entire day!

Our new Osakazuki is starting to change colour. We still haven’t decided if it is in a suitable location. The tips are all bare.

Is it normal for the tallest branches to fry all their leaves or lose them first?

It depends. Browning at the tips is from under watering or drought. Over watering you see yellowing or browning near the petiole end of the leaf.
But re the leaves dropping at the ends of branches first, then this is a natural progression of the tree in Autumn.

Really depends, did you get some drought damage/sun on those higher branches?

I had some issues with my Osakazuki... this year (3rd season) it's finally growing well and looks strong/hardy.

I still haven't experienced it's epic fall color in my location yet...

Thanks Acerholic. The acer is still in its original pot, so it is possible that I didn't water it consistently/enough. If the bare tips are natural, then I won't worry about it then :)

Thanks Connor. Yes, I got this acer right after the 40'C heatwave back in 2022. Most of the leaves were scorched/discoloured but the plant did recover. Even though it is by the north-facing fence, the higher branches do get more sun/wind/element than other parts of the plant. Best of luck with yours!

I see lots of nice buds at the tips for next year so all is well.

Perhaps this year Connor !!? I find it takes around 3 years for maples to settle into new environments.

Hello, Back from a week in the US -- where the colors were spectacular, but very late, causing general complaint -- and it has rained heavily here the entire time, along with strong winds. When I left only a few had started changing, the usual early ones like mandshuricum and pensylvanicum, but now many species maples have dropped leaf entirely. It seems to be related to where they are in the garden, for example a large, well protected triflorum is completely green, whereas one that's quite exposed has not a leaf. Of course, only a few of the JMs have started, which makes it a very late season; no doubt down to the heat and dry we experienced until mid-October.

Here are some pics I took between showers today, hopefully labeled. A bit muted compared to the norm, perhaps, but pretty anyway.

Aye, I heard that there could be winds up to 140 km/hr in Normandy.

I hope that Emery's, and everyone's trees in the UK and elsewhere will stay to the ground, and I hope it won't be as bad here...
