I transplanted a seedling -dug it out of a hedge and planted it in a good location - about ten years ago. It has been doing beautifully, but today noticed that it is splitting apart at the forks in the trunk. The tree has three large upright trunks coming off the base trunk -one split is all the way through. Will it heal itself, is there something I can do, or do I need to lop off much of this beautiful tree? Right now it is still a fairly small maple tree - maybe twenty feet high. Would appreciate any info - thanks.
