Hello, I'm steph french gardener and maple addict, I've lots of rare botanical maple and some cultivars and i create a new garden actually with lots of other rare plants. I was surprise you have not create a maple seed section in UBC. If some are interested I've a big Acer discolor acclimated in Z7 since 2008 (-18°c in 2012 all this friends are dead with frost) with lots of samaras for the firt time. I've no other maple with the same section in this garden and live in the middle of fields, thus not crossed polinisation. My list of maple seed for exchange with you in 2016: Acer discolor My wanted list : Acer buergerianum ssp. formosanum Acer campbelli ssp. Flabellatum Acer coriaceifolium Acer dystilum Acer duplicatoserratum Acer pauciflorum Acer pubinerve Acer sieboldianum Acer sieboldianum var.microphyllum Acer sieboldianum var. tsushinense Acer sieboldianum var.yezoense sieboldianu Acer pseudosieboldianum Acer pseudosieboldianum ssp. Takesimense Acer shirasawanum Acer tonkinense Acer wardii
Bonjour Steph, There is a "seed distribution/exchange 2016" thread in the sub-forum "Maple Society" (see top of the Maple forum page). This sub-forum is for Maple Society members only, but if you're an enthusiast, I think that the membership fee is worth spending: it's only £15 for a year ( 16,9865 €, the value of the pound has dropped dramatically since last June). The Maple Society Of course, seeds, or even seedlings can be exchanged via the other sub-forums, but for a small price, you will get the newsletter 4 times a year, and it's a must! Newsletter | The Maple Society Being a member allows you also to take part in the events organised by the society: I haven't, so far, but I will when I retire in a couple of years. why don't you join? Amicalement, Alain PS: you should visit "Semences du Puy" (Acer (Erable) Semences du Puy), they list 46 different species in their catalogue. Another interesting source for seeds/seedlings is Florama (Florama, conservateur de biodiversité depuis 25 ans)
Hello, I think that the maple society is a beautiful idea for the specialists, but the side restricted circle with entrance is some thing which disturbs me a little. The purpose of a forum, according to me, is to exchange in quite liberties and not restritivement on maples My suppliers of seeds and maple plant: Semences du Puy (france),Florama (france),Shieffield seed (usa), pépinière des Avettes (france), un jardin en marche (france)..., lots of public arboretum, and exchanges with lots of gardeners and specialist My actual maple list : 35 species of botanical maple (young plant 0 until 15 year old) and lots of in pot because i'm just starting the new garden But only one is in seed Acer disoclor if some maple enthousiast want to exchange seed is with lot of pleasure !
Wait till next week, and it'll be €3, and €1.50 the week after . . . but don't wait too long, or our Govt. will ban transactions in Euros . . .
I added both nurseries to the Resource page: Maples: Nurseries Specializing in Maples @AlainK , please check the listing and send me revised text if you have more to say about them.
Note guys that Jacques Urban of Florama told me he planned to retire in 2016 and is only selling existing stock, both plants and seeds. What a great plantsman he is. The Maple Society is not just for specialists but for enthusiasts as well. Since the OP is a maple enthusiast, membership, which includes the possibility of the seed exchange, is really "le must!" -E
Let's hope someone takes over. This place just can't disappear, it mustn't! Forgot to play 'LOTO' today...
And enthusiasts can learn a lot from specialists. And "vice-versa" maybe: Don't be shy Steph, post pictures of your trees. We'd all love to see them. As you said: You're asking for seeds, all right, if some of us have some, I'm certain members are ready to send you some. I'll have hunreds of Acer palmatum palmatum seeds to give away, but most people are more interested in other species I think. The Maple Society members who are collecting seeds are volunteers (FR: des bénévoles) who don't make any money. On the contrary, they spend time (and probably money) to collect seeds for the community, sort them, label them, pack them, put them in an envelope, write or print the addresses, and mail them. This doesn't mean members of the "UBC Maple Forum" can't share seeds, or even trees privately: we do!
Heh. Except this is no longer that unlikely, I guess! I sent my seeds into the Maple Society seed exchange last Tues. There will be lots of other seed of course, but this is what I sent this year (a very poor year for seeds with the drought as it happens): - heldreichii subsp trautvetteri - schneiderianum - monspessulanum - japonicum 'Aconitifolium' (often good cutleaf japonicums) - pseudosieboldianum (often stays true here) - sieboldianum - longipes (prob var weixiense) - pictum - rufinerve 'Albolimbatum' (often variegated seedlings) - triflorum - palmatum 'Villa Tarranto' (usually nice red strapleafs) - micranthum This is only a very small portion of the species (or hybrids) that will be distributed. As always I really anticipate getting and growing my seed from the Society, it's a fabulous program! -E
My actual maple list is : buergerianum campbelli var sinensis campestre capillipes carpinifolium circinatum cissifolium cordatum davidii diabolicum discolor henryi hyrcanum japonicum japonicum 'Vitifolium' mandshuricum micranthum miyabei monspessulanum oliverianum opalus ssp Obtusatum palmatum ssp.
