I love these trees. The colours both in the spring and in autumn are very nice. See :

And hooray! I finally found how to quote a message in a thread : click on the #34 (or else) in the bottom right-hand corner of the field of the message.

Good question : if Rancho Santa Margarita is in USDA zone 10a (30 to 35 °F/-1.1 to 1.7 °C), you probably never or very seldom have frost there. Yet, most maples are genetically programmed to have a period of dormancy. Isn't that a problem ?...

On Home, it's at the limit of zone 10b.

you are right, there is very rarely, if any frost here, and if it does it only occurs during late december-january and its a very light frost. the maples dont seem to have a probem going dormant in a climate much warmer than they are used to, only downside being is the fall colors are nonexistent. the only maples ive seen planted around here are silver maples

Well, the natural range of silver maple is from Maine and Minnesota, where the winters can be very harsh, to Mississippi and Alabama where the weather is comparatively very mild,
So I suppose that other maple species that are originally from cold-temperate areas can also adapt to warmer climates.

The problem with hardiness zones (one of the problems) is that it gives you an indication of the lowest temperatures a tree in the ground can survive, not how many days of heat waves it can stand. Which, for Japanese maples here, is unfortunately going to be more and more frequent...

I haven't. It's a famous French company, but I buy mine from Semences du Puy

I don't know if either of these suppliers can send to the USA because of customs rules. In any case, both have a good reputation. Send them a message for the delivery conditions, there should be someone to give you an answer in English. I hope ;-)

Or I can give them a phone call if you can't get trhough to them (PM me)

Excised acer glabrum seeds. The warm stratification finally softened the pericarps.

    Hi Soumil,

I wonder if you have A. pictum, or more A. truncatum. Have a look at this thread: Truncatum VS Mono Germination

I don't see any visible cotyledons, so that makes them truncatum AFAIK.

    Cheers, -E

yea i noticed that too, and i was confused. i thought only silver maples had hypogeal germination. for both species of seeds the cotyledons stayed inside the seed and the second shoot came up instead! but the leaves of the acer pictum are quite different from the truncatum seedling..
