We planted two small maple trees last June (2009) here in Vancouver, BC, Canada and they were doing fine. Recently, I noticed that both have small white spots on the leaves and the leaves are disappearing, i.e. some leaves have just tips missing others are half gone, yet others more then half gone. They disappear from the outside towards the stem. I cannot tell whether the white spots are moving and would be a type of insect that would eat the leaves or whether there is something else going on. Does anyone know what this could be and what we can do to rescue these trees. Thank you very much. I should mention that both Emperors are separated by a different small maple tree; forgot the name, but it has red bark and green leaves; that one is fine. thanks again for any insight you can provide caro
It certainly sounds like they are being eaten by insects. If you could post some pictures you might be able to elicit a more definite answer.
Here is a picture. Maybe a fungus is more likely than an insect because of the regular way of the leaves slowly disappearing (from the outside in)? Any tips on how to help our maples get well would be greatly appreciated.
