Could well be! We all know that nishiki refers to brocade or variegation and I believe "Hi no tori" is a transliteration of the Japanese word for a Phoenix or fire bird.

 

Agreed M, there is so much problem with names and translations it is hard to keep up. But all the synonyms etc on this thread have been sourced. Obviously those that have been given to me to list as similar etc etc, are from members personal experience and not from reference books. Thanks for a good discussion, it keeps us on our toes.

 

Yes, that's it. The most recent version of the document also lists it this way, i.e. Phoenix variegated is a synonym for the correct name: Hino tori nishiki (2006). Phoenix is a distinct cultivar. Probably some sellers left off the "variegated" part, and started the whole confusion.

@maf thanks for the link to Dick's page, I don't think I've seen it somehow. I just added 'Emi' to my wish list this morning! (I have a similar seedling but probably not as good.) I think many of these plants were "introduced" in the EU but not "named/selected" by him, he's sort of clumped them all together.

Speaking of Hippo, 'Lolli' looks like a very nice maple, is anyone growing it?

Looks like we have another for this thread. Acer palmatum 'Cosmos'. Known also as 'Radiant'. Possibly a sport from Cosmos. Thanks E @emery. It will be added to the list.

 

So just to clarify... Phoenix variegated and Hino Tori Nishiki are the same, but 'Phoenix' is a separate cultivar again?

A new one that has just come to light on the forum. Acer palmatum 'Verkade's Winter Gold'. And the synonyms are Wintergold and Winter gold.

These two are from me, but was mentioned by Charlie @amazingmaples some years ago.
They are Taimin nishiki and Rainbow. Both so very similar, that only maybe a label would tell the difference between the two.
So I will put them on #786.

Another one that has been posted by @Backcountry Dan is Acer palmatum 'Allen's Gold'. He has reliable information to say that the cultivar name is Alan's Gold. It will be added to the list.

 

Anorher that has come to light today is Acer palmatum 'Sweet Lucile' and the synonym is 'Skeleton Reach'
