I bought some mangos in febuary of this year and decided to plant the seed. I know the main varieties sold in the USA are Kent, Keitt, Haden, and Tommy Atkins. Does anyone know what type my tree is? On my tree i also noticed browning/blackening of some of the leaf tips. The second photo shows it. Does anyone know what is happening? Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!
Know nothing about mangoes, except to eat them. The link below appears to have extensive mango cultivation & disease information: http://www.horticultureworld.net/mango-researches.htm gb.
Your Mango won't be any "type" since it's a seedling. All named cultivars are vegetatively (asexually) reproduced my budding or grafting. So you can name it anything you like :-) HTH Chris
What did the mango you took the seed from look like? That will give you a better clue as to what the tree is. However, as Saltcedar says, all commercial cultivars are vegetative, so it's not technically a "named" variety. Regardless, it is very difficult to identify a mango variety by looking at the leaves. Tommy Atkins are large, green mangoes with a blush of red. Kents are very similar to Tommys, but tend towards a yellow blush before they redden. Keitts are green mangoes ripening to a dull yellow. Hadens are yellow ripening to red. And, being in Las Vegas, which imports a whole lot of different fruit, you shouldn't discount other cultivars. Of course, if you remember what the mango you ate looked like, that's more than half the battle. The browning leaf tips look to me like a water problem - either too much or too little. What's your watering schedule like? And where in the house does the plant live?
Thanks for all the information. As for the mango i ate all i know that it was really good, large, green with some red and yellow. I also bought it in febuary or so. The seed was fairly big too. My tree sits in my room next to a west facing window with fans on for much of the day to improve air circulation. For the browning areas and tips of the leaves, i decided to cut them off and havent seen them since. But there might be more problems! I do notice it takes between a week and 2 weeks for the soil to dry out for the most part. I only water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Lately i have been noticing blackening and black/brown spots on veins underneath a few of the leaves. Is that a sign of overwatering do you think? Or maybe lack of oxygen/nutrients? or even a fungus?
