I have been growing the mandavilla for three years. It is planted outdoors in Spring, and dug up in the fall and put indoors in the basement. I cut it back to about a foot above the soil, and don't give too much water, just enough to keep it alive. Sometimes the growth is activated and the vines are stringy. If too large I cut them back again. The idea is to keep it alive without too much growth until it can be planted again in the spring.

I do not treat it as house plant. But I do know it will grow well if given light and water, and cut back initially to about one foot above the soil. I also know cutting back to ground level kills the plant, since growth comes from stem shoots not the roots. My experience.
