Some yrs ago I was told that in order to get my White Pine to be real full (like what you'de want for your X-mas tree) that I should cut the candles (new growth) to about 1/2 when they were done sprouting. That was around June here in northern Indiana. I am now raising Blue spruce and the ones I planted last yr are starting to sprout new growth. Should I trim the new growth and when, to get these small trees to fill out nicely like the ones I see in expensive nurseries? Thanks for any suggestions. Bob-O

Yes, you can shear them - if a sheared look is what you want. Christmas tree growers use knives designed specifically for the purpose.
