My girlfriends grandparents have a Magnolia tree in the yard that has one limb that appears to be completely dead at the end. Also, at one time, there was an ant infestation. The limb in question has splits in the wood and upon investigation, has become home to earwigs. When I probed a few of the splits in the bark I found the bark to be pulp like and soft and the wood beneath to have a greasy black tar appearance. Also I noticed spots of white powdery "mold" on other branches. This tree means a lot to them. Any suggestions?? Can take pictures if needed.
Yes, post photographs, though it sounds like there is a lot going on with the tree, and that it might simply be best to have a certified ISA arborist come in and have a look at it.
