We live in Sydney, Australia. The blossoms and leaves of our lovely 20 foot Magnolia tree were eaten last summer by possums and this spring we found about 70% of the branches dried and dead - we snapped most off leaving 2 or 3 thin branches with some buds that the possums could not reach. I have covered these "live buds" with netting so that the possums can't eat them. Our tree has been severely damaged. What should we do? Cut it right back? Leave it? Can it be saved? Tony.
Hi Tony, I have sites on how to prune, but you aren't registered so I don't know if you will return for the info. Let me know if you come back. Newt
Hi, I have the same problem as Tony and also live in Sydney. My Magnolia was fantastic a few years a go but now any small leaf or bud that appears is eaten by possums. The tree doesn't look like it is in very good shape, but there are still some areas where the possums can't reach that are OK. Do you have any suggestions. I can set up a device to stop the possums coming back to the tree, but I need to know whether it is still salvageable. Anna
Hi Anna, Pictures might help. It would be best to see close ups of the damage and a picture of the entire tree. Newt
