I would like to know when the optimal time is for pruning a deciduous magnolia here in Vancouver BC. I believe it is a Magnolia stellata. It has quite a few upward growing shoots on it - almost like a vigorously pruned apple tree. I want to slow the growth down rather than just causing it to produce more upward shoots. Should I wait until the summer to prune it?

Enjoy the bloom then prune is my motto for magnolia and other early spring blooming plants.
Are the stellata not glorious this year, blooming even in February!
