I'm not sure of the type of tree but it is in trouble. With spring here I now notice that half the tree is not producing blooms or leaves. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the bark has several splits in it and when I pull it away there are what appear to be little potato type beetles in side. What are my options, just get some pesticide or is there another way

The sowbugs wouldn't have made the original wound. New bark can be seen coming in from the left in the left picture. Possibly there is a fungus at work and painting the wound with copper could help, somebody else might have more definite ideas.

do you have any pictures of the actual splits before you removed the bark? that might help to see what could be going on.
