I have a problem: A couple of years ago I have planted an 8 feet tall evergreen Magnolia in a 2 foot bed of rather "mulchy" soil over a rusty gravelly ground. The growth is extremely slow, the leaves were infected with all sorts of insects and fungus which I got rid of eventually. I fed the tree with chelate of Iron and am feeding it moderately with 686 fertiliser. Finally the leaves are growing but most of them turn yellowish and weak. I seek advice to improve performance.

Deep, fertile soil for these. Native to southeast US coastal plain.

Do M. grandiflora roots really go very deep?
