Does anyone know the best way to propagate the Magnolia/Michelia Alba? Currently, I have put a small container containing a mixture of peat, soil and root stimulator around the base of a branch, and I have been keeping it moist.

    Any other suggestions?

    Hi BlueDolphin,

Do you have any luck? My neighbor has a huge Michelia Alba tree and they are trimming it today. So I pick up a big branch and cutting out some young branches and hoping they will grow root.

It will be great to see if you have any luck with your method.

    Thanks!

Magnolias can be started easily from cuttings taken from young trees. These should be of partially matured wood, taken in summer, and treated with a rooting chemical. They root well in sand, especially under mist. Rooting them in small pots prevents transplanting difficulties later. Most named cultivars are grafted with a side or veneer graft in greenhouses during the winter. Small numbers of magnolias may be started by layering young trees. However layering can take a year or more to begin rooting. Lastly, magnolias can also be grown from seed. - Millet
