Magical two-tone trees

Two tone with a Gibsons Haircut (sounds like some vintage rockabilly lyrics!)

On St Andrews Road off North Road in Gibsons (Hopkins / Langdale) today (east side of road near Canada Post rural mailboxes)

this row of trees … mingling w typical local cedar hedge … a blossom cherry mash-up ?

I estimate that this subdivision was built up (this part of it, that is) in the 1990s

goodness knows what happened to this row of trees - the cedar hedge conceals much of the grafting and root zone (tho a bit of sprout was coming over to the public road side on one tree)

the mtns in background include Bowen Island and Cypress Bowl ski and the Lions

There are Akebono nearby that have finished (see earlier posts Sunshine Coast/Gulf Islands )

 

Yes, but maybe not for much longer. It looks like only one branch remains from the 'Kanzan'.

 

We nabbed an 'Ama-no-gawa' candidate in Surrey and North Delta today.

 

Here is another white-white, with 'Shogetsu' in Langley City and Township.

 

Back to 'Kanzan', there are two in this posting in Oakridge, a side-by-side, and a white over pink.

 

At the Fraser Cemetery in New Westminster, I posted two. Here is the more impressive one. The other is one of the youngsters just to the right.

 

Here is another in Surrey and North Delta that's as showy as the cemetery tree.

 

Here is a very sad-looking magical two-tone tree on private property at condo complex on Eaglecrest Drive in Gibsons.
But the flickers seem to like it.

 

I like the flicker, which seems to find the species part of the tree more to his liking. Of course, it's higher. But I saw a comment recently that cultivars of host trees don't always have the same attraction for their would-be visitors as the species plants do. So maybe this magical stuff is setting things right after all - we get the ornamental display, and the fauna get what they want from the rootstock growth.

 

Here is one from Fairview.

 

True — the ratio is 90% white blossom with hints of pink and one can easily see where the branches have been looped off

QUESTION - what is the typical root stock of these « magic trees »

AND - cause - is it poor pruning practice // grafts that did not take? // root stock mismatch to top ? Etc. Just curious .

perhaps I missed that info — thank you @wcutler

 

The typical rootstock is Prunus avium, sweet cherry. We've occasionally recognized 'Colt', a dwarfing rootstock (if I remember that correctly). These days there might be others, but avium as rootstock is often seen on young trees.
I think all your possible reasons apply.

Ah - I forgot all about this thread. Here are some from my neighbourhood - 29th & Ross, where the 'Kanzan' trees are doing especially well this year, but there are a few two-tone ones:

 

New cherry scout @Yumi A has posted a new candidate for our collection, a street tree in Kitsilano.

 

Here's one from Garry Point Park in Steveston. It's a terrible photo - I know - sorry.

 

And here's another one - from the festival favourite planting of Kanzans on 29th Ave. near Ross Street - only one of the trees has an out-of-control branch coming off of the root stock.

the SValu two tone blossom tree has beginning white on east side (toward high school) and nice burgundy leaves on west (toward London Drg)

I was driving so couldn’t take pix

@Pieter photographed flowers from a tree he found in Richmond, posted in an inquiry thread at https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/so-whats-going-on-here.104337/. He brought up a point that almost had me fooled recently - when the mazzard (sweet cherry) branches are pushing through the ornamental branches, it can look like both flowers are growing from the same branch. That won't be the case, but it can seem that way.
