Realised I still have other problem stuff that I have failed dismally to id.
This was in a park in Funchal. Madeira........Jardin Municipal De Madeira.
Most trees had labels...naturally this one was unlabelled.
The epicalyx/calyx rules out many Malvaceae.
Am I wrong to have rule out Hibiscus tiliaceus????
Your expert help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Thank you again Lila.
I have found a botanical illustration for Hibiscus elatus / Talipariti elatum that shows an excellent match for the epicalyx /calyx .
The leathery leaves also look a match.
