Our lawn seems to get lumpier and lumpier over the winter. we are in Vancouver Canada and there are no moles and nothing breaks the surface. There are small dirt pellets in some places. When you walk on it you could easily turn an ankle - what could it be??? the lumps do not collapse when you walk on them the are solid. There are 2 cherry trees in the back where it is worse but none in the front.

    any help would be appreciated

Sweet cherry often makes thick roots near the surface. Japanese cherries grafted on sweet cherry and planted near sidewalks apt to buckle them eventually, that's how serious a surface root sweet cherry may make. I noticed a grafted 'Hosokawa-nioi' this week in Seattle that had a sweet cherry root over six inches thick cut to fit in a new sidewalk; other thick roots snaked away from the base of the trunk. These were actually on top of the ground.
