I inherited a beautiful 3-foot tall bamboo potted plant. It still seems to be doing well, but the rocks it is planted in have started turning black. Is this mold? Do I need to transplant the bamboo from the rocks into potting soil? I've never had much luck with bamboo after about a year, and I can't figure out what suddenly causes them to wither.

You are absolutely right about the Lucky Bamboo. Any idea why the rocks have turned black? I was using filtered water.

Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) can have issues sitting in water long term. I moved both of mine to soil without any trouble after about a year in water to head off any potential problems.
The roots were long, so I snipped them back to about an inch and then planted them in with a big pot of Syngoniums about a year ago and they are both doing great. I use reg tap water/hard water.
