    I'm thinking Dichroa ...febrifuga I think.

    Yes, I believe you're right. I had a feeling it was a member of the hydrangea family. Thanks. It seems to layer very easily and is a very pretty plant. I'll have to look into its pruning requirements.

    It also starts easily from cuttings. Mine has not been the most decorative thing in the yard; perhaps the site has been imperfect. I think it blooms and berries best with more sun. I haven't quite figured out the best time to prune it as the berries (in fall if I recall correctly) are the key feature... but it's not an aggressive grower so hasn't needed too much pruning.
