lovely Scottish wildflower

    Can anyone help me identify this? Photographed in early July at a low to medium elevation in the north west highlands.

    Ps - I think the photo may be on its side! Hmm. haven't figured that out yet either.

    Well, well. yes. Thank you so much.
    I'm more familiar with local alpine wildflowers and this one baffled me - all because of expectations. I just didn't think of orchids.

    A species of Dactylorhiza, probably Dactylorhiza fuchsii or Dactylorhiza maculata. Species in the genus Orchis have a different flower structure (and are also generally less common; Dactylorhiza is by far the commonest orchid genus in Britain).

    Oh, and yes, the pic is on its side ;-)

    Both were previously: Orchis
    And knowing botanists probably will be again some day!
