I also have a request to identify a mushroom. I live near New Orleans, Louisiana and I found this on our lawn. There are two of them growing about .6m apart. The temperature has varied from lows of -2 deg C to highs of 22 deg C in the last couple of weeks. The mushrooms are growing in an area that gets full sun after noon. They are about 4" (10 cm) tall.

I have no intention of eating this thing; I'm just curious about what it is. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

    Hi,
What you have there is one of the Stinkhorns (Phallales). I don't have a reference text at hand but the genus "Clathra" comes to mind as a likely candidate for a search engine should you want to narrow it down further.

Here we go. Sorry if you were having trouble with "Clathra" It seems Clathrus ruber is what I was mis-remembering.
