This isn't exactly "In the News" but a timely article I enjoyed reading today from Atlas Obscura: Tracking Down the Long-Lost Orchards of the California Gold Rush Tracking Down the Long-Lost Orchards of the California Gold Rush - Gastro Obscura (atlasobscura.com)
Fascinating ! (Then I clicked in to the real original mcd fries recipe :) And Nevada City (named in article) is indeed gold country - an easy drive to Donner Pass The soil is dusty red and dry in summer I wonder how what this person has catalogued compares with what the apple festival people (used to be at UBC Botanical Garden?) gathered info about (in other words - did any Calif old trees make their way up here — similar climate in Okanagan) And lots of people left Calif gold to seek Klondike gold.
I meant to add as well that with wildfires in the west - US & Canada - I wonder if any of these trees destroyed I know a couple of places in Okanagan (BC) where there are some fine old fruit trees off various trails I think spread by wildlife (pits in scat / poop) As one might find apple trees in odd locations at Coast Margot - Vanc Island had a few old settlements up North End of the Island And where was Cougar Annie? Is that the oddly projecting Brooks Peninsula?
