Lost Lagoon flower spikes with green prickly bracts, maybe yellow flowers?

    I'm not even sure what I'm seeing here - are these semi-circular green prickly bracts surrounding emerging yellow flowers? Leaves are alternate, so not Lamiaceae?

    Great, thanks Tyrlych. Amaranthus retroflexus is native to BC. The photo on the Wikipedia Amaranthus retroflexus - Wikipedia page looks just like it. Some common names: pigweed amaranth, and common tumbleweed.
