We are wanting to get a tree as a memorial for our Great Dane that recently passed away. Could anyone suggest a tree that might represent a loyal companion, who wasn't quite the right colour as he was supposed to be, and larger then life. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Michele
That's a no-brainer.... OAK. Big, strong, Robin Hood was loyal to the crown and Oaks are used as a symbol of Robin hood.
My sincere condolences on your recent loss. I'd like to suggest some form of arborvitae - literally "tree of life", trees that held such great importance for early peoples around here. Thuja plicata 'Zebrina' might be an appropriate choice. A tree of unexpected color and beauty that can grow quite large in time.
Thank you to everyone who had ideas! We haven't made the final choice, but now we have the pictures to make a choice with. When we start our landscaping around the tree (we just moved to 5.5 acres) I will check back to ask the people in the know! Thanks again Michele
That's the first thing that came to mind. I also like scarlet oaks. Tricolor beech is another favorite.
