My father-in-law has granted us use of his front yard for gardening and mentioned that he was wanting to build a more private sitting/reading area. He is looking for low maintenance as he currently has around 3000 sqft of grass to mow. It is north facing but on a corner lot that has a lot of sun exposure.

I was thinking of fencing an area off on the north and west side (sides with road) the east currently has a garden along the driveway with a medium to large sized horse chestnut. I want to put in a JM along the western side nearish to the fence which may have kiwi trellised along it. I want a JM that will be upright that will spread out to provide some cover that can be walked under so a bench can be placed underneath. The plan is to incorporate rock garden in the area. As for limits on size, its near a chestnut so height isnt too much of a concern but I think maybe 20 ft tall and 20 ft diamater would be a good upper limit. It will be planted 10-15ft from a utility pole. I dont have any preferences but it will be more of a focal point in the greenery so maybe some reds, oranges, yellows would be nice with a full canopy. Purples are not a favorite but red/coral barks are quite nice (I just don't really like bloodgoods because they are everywhere).

thanks for the help on my first post here. Browsed quite a lot for help on my Shishigashira which got burnt on my north facing condo patio last year but is doing well this year, eagerly waiting for fall. I also am trying a cutting and going to try some seeds that I collected in the spring.

I would suggest A.p. 'Omato'. which has large leaves, a spreading canopy, and nice orange/red fall color. Very clean looking tree.

Thanks that sounds like it is a good fit though it appears to be uncommon; where would I buy this? I found 'Osakazuki' also apears to fit the bill and I have seen it around locally. Both are beautiful but Osakazuki sounds like it grows quite slowly.

Not sure of a canadia source. If you can buy from the US there are a number of Orgeon and WA nurseries, like Greers, that could probably hep you.

You will find that all Japanese maples grow quite slowly :)
