Is this necessary when planting a fruit tree? The nursery strongly recommends it so the tree starts taking up water immediately and getting rid og the "shock". One service advisor said if you don't use it the tree has a good chance of dying because the roots will strangle each other. Is it not better to use some bone meal or phosphorous in the planting area?
All of the above is for the most part rubbish. Bone meal or phosphorus could be useful where a soil test has indicated a need for nutrients supplied by these, but should never be considered something that is automatically applied regardless of specific circumstances. http://www.puyallup.wsu.edu/~Linda Chalker-Scott/Horticultural Myths_files/index.html
