...offers information as to the cold hardiest palms grown outside without a greenhouse environment in variable (zone 7-8 Chilliwack B.C. ) with very strong arctic outflow winds in the January- February period.
Although most palms mentioned survive in the degrees Celsius extremes mentioned with some (little to much) damage .The biggest factor affecting them after temperature is a covering offered them before temperatures drop much below freezing.... -3 Celsius for example...by covering them when small with a 5 gallon bucket while it is still freezing cold temperatures till thaw in spring (White to reflect sun and not cook them). Later a tent of plastic on a wooden frame.
Having grown outdoor palms for 15 years from the rarest to the commonly found I have found the following to be the best performers in Canada :
NEEDLE PALM (Rapidophyllum Hystrix) ..hardy to -26 degrees celsius...Does not grow fast.... very slow
SABAL MINOR McCURTAIN COUNTY ..hardy form to zone 7 ....slow but strong plant
KUMOAN FAN PALM (Trachycarpus Takil) zone 8..marginal zone 7 with protection..Very Fast ,Faster than regular windmill palms and much improved robustness and impressive size to 45 feet (Smooth trunk)
MANIPUR PALM zone 8-marginal zone 7 ..newly discovered..Blue wax on fan leaf back adds two tone effect and great beauty ..Strong grower
CHILEAN WINE PALM ..zone 8 Everyones favourite...2-3 foot WIDE trunk in 300 years but an incredibly hardy and robust pinnate (ostriche feather) leaved palm

So with all you palm people here, do any of you recognize this palm? Trying to get an ID. Attached are pics of the big fruit, a piece, and the seed inside, and inside the seed the meat is all white.

    Gracias.
