My very old lilac tree had grass growing around the base of the trunk. It was like that when I moved here. Totally neglected. I made a circle about 36" diameter. Is that large enough? I want to add some mushroom compost and about 1-2 cups of lime. What is the best way to add both? Should I add the compost first or the lime or should I mix it up altogether? It gets lots of blooms but I'd like to promote a little more foilage. Thank you.

Spread the compost as a mulch, sprinkle the lime over the top. Or put it on first.

Best to sample soil and have it tested to see what nutrient sources (including lime) might be needed. Otherwise all you are working from is assumption.
