Hi everyone: as per Daniel's suggestion, will post a few flowers at a time. Does anyone know which species and varieties these are? I think the blue one is a poppy of some kind (photographed at the end of August in West Van), the cream one (photographed in June) was about 4" in diameter, the small orange flowers (taken May 29 in West Van) I have no idea, and the pink one is a dahlia but I don't know which kind (it was photographed at Kaleden at the beginning of Sept., and was about 4" in diameter). Any help greatly appreciated! Michelle
Dear Ron: Okay, please forgive the late night stupidity. It's a list of all four flowers. But do you know which dahlias? The dahlias have been the tough ones to nail down as there are so many varieties. Thanks, Michelle
The first one may be a named cultivar which it might be possible to pin down if you talk to a dahlia expert. But be aware that highly popular plants like dahlias have numerous cultivars with some looking quite alike yet not being the same introductions. The last one looks like a dwarf bedding dahlia. These are often raised from seed and sold as seed strains rather than individually named clonal selections raised from cuttings or division. The specimen you photographed may not have a cultivar name of its own ('Little Cutey'*), but rather be an example of a seed strain (Little Cutey Series). *Name made-up for purposes of illustration
I totally agree with Ron about the Dahlias, but if you have the time you can look through the following websites and try to spot the exact cultivar of the first dahlia: http://www.artsnursery.com/shopping/shopping.asp?classid=4 http://www.ferncliffgardens.com/
